Qatar initiates new projects as north field expansion advances

23/07/23

Qatar`s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has initiated 22 new projects worth more than QAR 4.1 billion (USD 1.1 billon) in 2023. So far, six projects have been awarded and 10 are in the process of implementation. The remaining six will enter the tender stage in quarter three of this year.

The six awarded projects are worth an estimated QAR 1.1 billion (USD 300 million), while the 10 projects in implementation have a value of over QAR 3 billion (USD 820 million). Such projects include the development of Hamad Medical Corporation , Madinat Khalifa Health Centre, Qatar Academy Sidra and the development of the Ministry of Municipality’s Veterinary Laboratories.

In addition, Ashghal will be tendering for a further six projects in the third quarter of this year, which include infrastructure and public buildings projects which align with the State plan. Designs for these projects have already commenced and include the Court Complex and Court of Cassation, Al Thumama Main Post Office Building and Road Transport Customs Buildings.

Further construction updates indicate that the multi billion dollar North Field Expansion (NFE) mega project has entered a new phase with the addition of value added partners (VAPs). Last month Qatar Energy signed definitive agreements with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), covering the supply of 4 million tonnes of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) annually for 27 years and a 5% stake in the NFE project. Currently, China is the largest consumer of LNG from Qatar, who sold the country 15 million tonnes, as well as LPG, helium and condensates.

The NFE project comprises North Field South (NFS) and North Field East (NFE) and will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from the current 77 million tonnes per year (MTPY) to 126.
