Qatar’s agricultural sector expected to grow significantly

22/09/24

Qatar’s agriculture sector has experienced significant growth and is projected to reach approximately QAR 812 million (USD 223.1 million) by 2029 according to research by Mordor Intelligence.

As a result, any predicted growth will contribute to the nation’s food security and self-sufficiency. Most importantly, figures show the sector is expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% from an estimated QAR 623 million (USD 171) million in 2024.

Furthermore, the upcoming National Food Security Strategy 2024 - 2030 aims to build on the successes of the previous strategy, which focused on four key pillars. Specifically, these were diversifying trade routes, minimising food losses, enhancing reserve capacities and optimising local cultivation of crops, livestock and fish. Additionally, the primary objectives of the new strategy are to promote sustainability through modern technologies and innovations, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030.

Most notably, the vegetable sector has seen remarkable advancements with local production nearly doubling over the past five years. Key vegetable cultivation including tomatoes, pumpkins, eggplant, cabbage, cucumbers, onions and cauliflowers have become staples in Qatari agriculture. Furthermore, Qatar has achieved self-sufficiency in dairy products, while the livestock, poultry and fishery sectors are also thriving.

In order to further bolster agricultural productivity, Qatar is encouraging farmers to adopt advanced farming techniques. The integration of technology in agricultural practices is essential, especially given the country’s challenging climate characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures. Innovative methods such as hydroponics, smart irrigation and aquaponics have been deployed, enabling optimal utilisation of arable land and improving the quality of agricultural outputs.

Hydroponics, a leading system in vertical farming, is gaining traction among Qatari farmers, allowing for the efficient cultivation of local fruits and vegetables with minimal water usage. This commitment to sustainable agricultural practices positions Qatar as a leader in regional food security initiatives.
