Qatars Government prioritising environment and biodiversity

02/06/24

Qatars government has introduced several environmental initiatives to preserve the ecosystem, recyle water and enhance biodiversity.

Such initiatives are nature based solutions (Nbs) and focus heavily on agriculture, which have resulted in the detailed preparation of maps to better understand areas suitable for use. These maps have also identified the types of trees and crops best suited to each region.

Moreover, the NbS initiatives are closely aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 goals and has contributed to enriching and sustaining the country’s coastal areas through the expansion of tree forests in natural reserves. As a result, these forests have shown great potential in enhancing biodiversity and improving food security. In addition such forested areas assist the quest to reduce carbon as well as produce oxygen. Most notably, the State has developed its coastal areas by successfully addressing challenges including rising temperatures, high salinity and limited arable land.

Likewise, positive results have been achieved in collaboration with specialised scientific research centres. As such, Qatar has seen considerable success in reviving its ecosystems by focussing on its people and by implementing science combined with cutting edge technology. Demonstrating its progress, in 2022 Qatar announced a project to plant ten million trees by 2030. In the same year, the One Million Trees initiative was launched.

Most importantly, the States efforts have resulted in the preparation of a national programme for the conservation of marine ecosystems for all the country’s coasts and beaches. As a result, it is expected that this programme will contribute to enriching and supporting marine biodiversity by protecting and conserving seagrass beds and coral reefs.
