Qatar’s population hits 3 million as imports and exports rise

18/02/24

Qatars population reached the three million mark in January 2024, according to information released by the country`s Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA).

The exact population was recorded as 3,118,000, which represents a monthly increase of 5.1% from December of the previous year and an annual growth rate of 5.5% compared to January 2023. In comparison, Qatar`s population in January of the previous year was approximately 2.95 million as per PSA data.

Reaching this important milestone is a reflection of consistent government investment as well as the economic and infrastructure advancements which have resulted in attracting a global workforce. Furthermore, the country’s strategic location, combined with its ambition to become a regional hub for trade, finance and sports, have amplified its demographic growth.

In fact, over the past five years, Qatar has witnessed a consistent increase in its population, driven by open economic policies, ease of investment opportunities and strategic initiatives to diversify its economy. Such initiatives have created a welcoming environment for international investments, businesses and talent. As a result, such efforts have significantly boosted the construction, hospitality and services sectors. This was particularly witnessed as the country prepared to host mega events, including the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Further PSA statistics revealed the value of the country's imports were QAR 10.5 billion (USD 2.88 billion) during December 2023 with an increase of 4.2% year – on year. This was also an increase of 7% from November 2023. In terms of exports, figures amounted to approximately QAR 29.2 billion (USD 8.02 billion) in December 2023 marking an increase of 10.2% compared to November 2023.
